Port Hope’s Walton Street Reconstruction Project Kicks Off Phase Two

The Municipality of Port Hope has commenced the second phase of the extensive Walton Street reconstruction project in the town’s downtown core. The project, deemed a ‘critical upgrade’ by the municipality, involves replacing aging infrastructure, including century-old watermains, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers along the main street. The project’s approved budget stands at $6,409,000, with the reconstruction focusing on the stretch of Walton Street between Queen and Cavan streets. Phase one of the project, completed in 2023, involved a smaller-scale reconstruction of Walton Street from Pine to Church streets. Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the project incorporates a range of above-ground improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and the streetscape. These include an extended curb on the south side of Walton Street from John Street to Ontario Street, accessibility improvements, benches and table seating, planter beds, bollards, and seasonal fencing to create additional pedestrian space. Mayor Olena Hankivsky emphasized the project’s broader significance, stating, ‘We are building more than just a road – we are building a better future for all who live and work here.’ She encouraged community support, local shopping, and understanding during the project’s duration. The municipality has introduced free public transit on routes A and B in Port Hope throughout the reconstruction period to mitigate travel disruptions and support downtown businesses. ‘Our downtown businesses are the heartbeat of our community, and they will remain open throughout this project,’ Mayor Hankivsky said. ‘The free transit initiative ensures that everyone has easy access to our wonderful local shops and services.’ Chief Administrative Officer Candice White assured minimal disruptions during the project and emphasized open communication with stakeholders. The municipality anticipates the new infrastructure to have a lifespan of 75 to 100 years, providing long-term benefits to the community.
