Celebration Key: Carnival’s Ambitious Cruise Port to Transform Grand Bahama’s Economy

Carnival Corporation’s latest venture, Celebration Key, is making significant strides as a newly designed private cruise port destined to transform the economic landscape of Grand Bahama. This ambitious project not only aims to become a premier destination for cruise passengers but also plays a pivotal role in revitalizing the local economy. Expected to attract 2.2 million guests annually starting in 2025, Celebration Key is set to become a cornerstone of tourism and economic development on the island.

A striking feature of Celebration Key’s development is its commitment to local employment. Currently, over 85% of the workforce involved in the construction are residents of Grand Bahama. This substantial local participation spans across more than 180 workers and 29 Bahamian-owned construction companies actively engaged in the project. Such extensive use of local labor circulates financial benefits within the community, bolstering the local economy and supporting a wide array of local enterprises.

The scale of the project is evident in its recent $100 million investment aimed at extending the pier to accommodate two additional ships by 2026. This expansion is projected to generate over 700 permanent jobs in various sectors including retail, food and beverage, and shore excursions. The comprehensive involvement of local businesses in all aspects of the development provides a unique employment opportunity for the community, significantly impacting Grand Bahama’s economic landscape.

Slated to open in July 2025, Celebration Key will offer an exclusive retreat for passengers of Carnival Cruise Line, as well as potential visits from Holland American Line, Princess Cruises, and Cunard Line. The resort will feature a range of amenities and attractions, including dining and shopping facilities spread across five uniquely themed “portals,” each reflecting the rich culture and heritage of the Bahamas. Notable among these is Lokono Cove, which will focus on delivering an authentic Bahamian experience with locally owned shops selling primarily locally sourced products. The resort’s thematic alignment with Carnival Cruise Line’s Excel-Class ships promises a seamless transition from ship to shore, enriching the overall guest experience.

The first ship to dock at Celebration Key will be Carnival Vista, marking the beginning of a new era for cruise tourism in Grand Bahama.
