The Maldives aims to set a benchmark in tourism expansion, according to Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal. Speaking at the ‘Maldives Media Meet’ during ATM 2024 at the World Trade Center in Dubai, Minister Faisal highlighted the unique brand of tourism the Maldives has developed over the past 50 years as a model for the world. He emphasized the government’s collaboration with the private sector to maintain the country’s tourism quality at the highest level.
Minister Faisal noted the awards received by the Maldives, including recognition as the leading destination in the Indian Ocean, as evidence of this commitment. Acknowledging the evolving nature of the tourism industry, Minister Faisal praised the Maldives for adapting well to changes, particularly evident in its recovery and growth following the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted the expected 6.5% increase in tourist arrivals this year as a significant step towards the goal of attracting 2 million tourists annually and boosting tourism revenue to USD 6 billion.
Minister Faisal attributed this growth to the dedication of industry leaders, hardworking employees, loyal tourism markets, and visitors. He underscored ongoing efforts to expand Maldives tourism, including ambitious plans to enhance transportation infrastructure to improve the visitor experience. Special attention was drawn to the upcoming opening of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, which is expected to increase passenger capacity to seven million annually. Additionally, plans for developing 15 more domestic airports in the next five years were highlighted.
Minister Faisal concluded by expressing optimism about the future of tourism in the Maldives, stressing the importance of innovation and collaboration to sustain its bright prospects.
