IMD Forecasts Heatwave in Northwest India, Predicts Rainfall for Southern States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting heatwave conditions over northwest India till May 18, 2024. States likely to experience these conditions include Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has also warned that several areas in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Haryana could witness temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the coming five days.

On the other hand, light rainfall is expected in various southern states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The IMD has stated that a wet spell with isolated heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is likely to continue over south Peninsular India till May 18, 2024. Additionally, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance into the South Andaman Sea, some parts of the Southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands around May 19, 2024.

Heatwave Predictions

The IMD has predicted heatwave conditions in isolated/some pockets over Konkan on May 15; over West Rajasthan during May 15-18; over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, south Haryana, Bihar during May 16-18; and over north Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan on May 17 and 18, 2024.

Severe heatwave conditions are also likely in some parts of West Rajasthan on May 17 and 18, and in isolated pockets of Punjab and south Haryana on May 18, 2024.

Hot and humid weather conditions are expected to prevail over Konkan and Goa on May 15; Saurashtra and Kutch during May 16-18; and Gangetic West Bengal on May 17 and 18.

A gradual rise in temperature of about 3-5 degrees Celsius is likely over many parts of Northwest and East India during the next five days.

Rainfall Predictions

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh during May 16-18, and Assam and Meghalaya on May 17 and 18, 2024.

Scattered light rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (30-40 kmph) is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on May 15, and is likely to increase to fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during May 16-18, 2024.

Isolated light to moderate rainfall is likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during May 17-19, 2024.
