Jetwing Hotels, a renowned name in Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector for over five decades, is unwavering in its dedication to driving positive change for both people and the planet. As a testament to this commitment, Jetwing Hotels has invested upwards of one million USD to expand its solar photovoltaic (PV) installations by 1.6 megawatts (MW) by July 2024. The installation process commenced in December 2023 and has already reached a significant milestone, currently standing at 65% completion.
Since 2010, Jetwing Hotels has been a trailblazer in incorporating renewable energy into its operations. The journey began with the installation of a 20-kilowatt (kW) system at Jetwing Blue in Negombo, specifically catering to guest room lighting. Over the past fourteen years, Jetwing Hotels strategically integrated solar PV systems totaling 925 kW across its properties, including its corporate office, Jetwing House, in Colombo, which boasts its own 40 kW solar PV system.
In 2023 alone, Jetwing Hotels generated 1,069-megawatt hours (MWh) of solar energy, equivalent to powering 13,490 households and offsetting 608 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The forthcoming solar PV system expansions will elevate the current capacity to 2.6 MW, achieved through a combination of new installations and the enlargement of existing systems.
Currently, Jetwing Hotels fulfills 8% of its electricity needs through solar PV installations. With the upcoming expansion, this contribution will triple, covering 24% of the total electricity consumption through solar power. While most installations are roof-mounted, select Jetwing properties are embracing innovative approaches. At Jetwing Vil Uyana and Jetwing Kaduruketha, solar PV systems will be integrated into the roof structures of car parks, optimizing available space.
Moreover, Jetwing Kaduruketha and Jetwing Surf will feature systems capable of generating surplus energy, with excess power being fed back into the national grid. Jetwing Safari Camp, located near Yala National Park, will epitomize the brand’s commitment to sustainability with the installation of a 120 kW roof-mount solar PV system. This initiative will play a pivotal role in reducing the hotel’s carbon footprint, surpassing all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
Jetwing Hotels’ investment underscores its alignment with Sri Lanka’s sustainable development goals. By supporting the nation’s ambitions for renewable energy adoption and carbon neutrality, Jetwing contributes to a greener future. With recent expansions, 66% of Jetwing Hotels’ energy demand will be met through self-produced renewable sources.
Guided by stringent Environment Management Systems and ISO 14001 standards, Jetwing Hotels continuously tracks greenhouse gas emissions. The latest installations are projected to reduce emissions by over 1,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, reinforcing Jetwing’s commitment to sustainability.
Jetwing Hotels’ dedication to renewable energy and sustainable practices has garnered recognition, including the Green Investment Excellence Award from the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka in 2023. With a legacy rooted in authentic Sri Lankan hospitality, Jetwing Hotels remains a frontrunner in sustainable tourism, advocating for community empowerment, environmental conservation, and resource efficiency.
