IPL 2024: A Season of Sixes

The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed an unprecedented dominance of the bat, with the ball being mercilessly dispatched to the boundaries. The tournament has seen a record-breaking number of sixes hit, surpassing the previous best of 1124 in 2023. As of the completion of 65 matches, a staggering 1133 maximums have been recorded.

The season has redefined powerplay batting, with teams adopting an aggressive approach in the first six overs. The result has been the highest total of 299 sixes in this phase. This onslaught has been driven by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have emerged as the most destructive batting unit, smashing a total of 146 sixes.

Abhishek Sharma has been the leading individual six-hitter, with 35 maximums to his name. Virat Kohli, despite his reputation for grounded batting, has surprisingly taken more risks this season and is second on the list with 33 sixes.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata has witnessed the most sixes (154) this season, but it is Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium that has recorded the best frequency of sixes. A maximum has been hit every 8.95 deliveries at the Delhi venue.

The relentless hitting of sixes has not only entertained fans but also raised questions about the balance between bat and ball in the modern game. As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen if teams can find ways to contain the six-hitting spree and restore some equilibrium to the contest.
