Edmonton Fringe Festival’s ‘Sustain Fringe’ Campaign Shows Success Amidst Financial Challenges

Amidst ongoing financial challenges, the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival’s ‘Sustain Fringe’ campaign has garnered encouraging support. The campaign, launched in March, aims to sustain the festival’s ‘transformative power of the arts’ by inviting the community to contribute through donations, sponsorships, and volunteerism. Since its inception, over 290 individuals have become monthly donors, collectively raising $100,000. Organizers have emphasized the escalating expenses, dwindling funding, and unpredictable revenue sources that threaten the festival’s viability. The cancellation of the 2020 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a substantial revenue loss of $3 million, further exacerbating the financial strain. Based on industry projections, the recovery window for the arts sector has extended beyond the previously estimated timeframe of three to five years, now projected to span a decade. To ensure the festival’s longevity, organizers encourage continued support through monthly donations, Fringe 50/50 ticket purchases, and sponsorships. The goal is to raise $300,000 by the end of this year’s festival, which will take place from August 15 to 25 in Old Strathcona. The festival, now in its 43rd year, will showcase 216 productions across 38 venues, featuring over 1,600 artists from local, national, and international backgrounds. Last year’s festival attracted over 500,000 site visits, generating over $16 million for the local economy and returning over $1.2 million in ticket sales to the participating artists. This year’s festival theme, ‘Find Your Fringe,’ will highlight various aspects, including the popular Late Night Cabaret, which will relocate from the Backstage Theatre to the Granite Curling Club. Additionally, the Indigenous-centered performance series pêhonân will make a resurgence.
