Fox News Media has requested the opportunity to host a vice presidential debate ahead of the 2024 election. In a letter sent to both the Trump and Biden campaigns, Fox News Media expressed its availability to host the debate on July 23, August 13, or dates following the nomination conventions. The proposed debate would be hosted by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, who Fox News Media President Jay Wallace described as “obvious choices as the faces of our political coverage.” Fox News Media also suggested Virginia State University as a possible location for the debate, as it was selected by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) as the first Historically Black College or University to host a presidential debate. Despite not hosting a Democratic debate in 2016 or 2020, Fox News Media secured town halls with Democratic candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand. Former President Trump accepted the invitation on behalf of his future vice presidential running mate, who has yet to be chosen. Trump urged Vice President Kamala Harris to agree to the debate and expressed his hope for it to be held at Virginia State University. The Biden campaign had previously accepted CBS News’s invitation for a vice presidential debate this summer, setting the stage for a potential showdown between Harris and the Republican vice presidential nominee. The Biden-Harris campaign requested that the debates be held in a TV studio, with microphones that automatically cut off when a speaker’s time limit expires. They also asked for the debates to involve only the two candidates and the moderator, without an in-person audience. Additionally, they requested the exclusion of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. or other independent or third-party candidates. The Biden campaign expressed its eagerness for the Trump campaign to accept one of the proposed dates to finalize the debate schedule. The scheduling of these debates follows Biden’s challenge to Trump for multiple debates, which Trump has accepted. The dates proposed by Biden for the presidential debates are June 27 on CNN and September 10 on ABC News. Trump has indicated his acceptance of these dates and expressed his willingness to debate Biden anywhere, anytime. The fast-paced scheduling of these debates reflects the heightened anticipation for the 2024 election.
