In a major push to promote electrification, Uber is offering substantial financial incentives to drivers in London who switch to electric vehicles (EVs). Effective May 21, drivers without EVs will receive a £5,000 grant towards the purchase or lease of a new or used EV. This initiative, in partnership with bp Pulse, also includes three months of free charging credits worth £750 for all EV drivers, followed by an exclusive discounted charging rate through bp Pulse. To further support drivers, Uber is offering an additional £12,000 to £17,000 for the purchase of specific EV models. Drivers can utilize the grant funds as a lump-sum payment, or opt for a rental or rent-to-buy arrangement. Uber’s general manager in the UK, Andrew Brem, expressed the company’s commitment to leading the decarbonization of transport in Europe through the ride-hailing sector. In response to inquiries, Casper Nixon, an Uber spokesperson, stated that the company has invested $800 million globally to reduce the costs of EV ownership for drivers. This move aligns with Uber’s broader efforts to promote sustainability, including a recently announced five million euro emergency EV charging initiative in France. By providing these incentives, Uber aims to accelerate the adoption of EVs among its drivers and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
