This collaboration brings a curated collection of her captivating photographs to the hotel’s LIAN Lounge, following an exclusive dinner held at The Gallery in celebration of Chen Man’s inaugural exhibition at the Shenzhen Art Museum.
Chen Man’s exhibition at the Shenzhen Art Museum showcases her latest works, spanning photography, painting, and installation art. Drawing inspiration from the strength, emotions, and perspectives of women, Chen Man harmoniously blends traditional Chinese artistic elements with modern techniques. Her multifaceted creations explore commonalities beneath diverse appearances, promoting a message of unity, harmony, and diversity.
As a fervent admirer of Mandarin Oriental, Chen Man also presents her photographs in the LIAN Lounge, situated on the hotel’s 78th floor. These artworks showcase her masterful use of fans as artistic elements, featuring renowned celebrities holding fans, including Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh.
Paying homage to the hotel group’s Oriental heritage, the eleven-bladed fan symbolizes the unifying identity of all Mandarin Oriental hotels. Chen Man’s bespoke fan design draws inspiration from the rich traditions and craftsmanship of southern China, particularly the lion dance. The striking red abstract motif against a neutral background embodies the spirit of inclusivity synonymous with Shenzhen, one of China’s burgeoning metropolises. This exquisite piece of art graces the hotel’s lobby, adding a touch of elegance to the welcoming space.
Reflecting on her inspiration, Chen Man explains, “When I was invited to create a fan for Mandarin Oriental, Shenzhen, I drew upon my childhood studies of Chinese paintings. The theme of blending Oriental and Western aesthetics resonates deeply with me and is reflected in my photography. I envisioned a lion painted in vermilion, a traditional Chinese color representing happiness, openness, protection, and wisdom.”
