Following his visits to China and Indonesia, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk met with Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali. The meeting centered around the potential implementation of Starlink internet services in Sri Lanka, with the aim of expanding internet access to remote communities and fostering economic development. The discussion highlighted the transformative impact of connectivity on education and economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas. Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman, who accompanied President Wickremesinghe, echoed the importance of bringing connectivity to remote communities to enhance access to education and economic opportunities.
Musk’s visit to Sri Lanka garnered significant attention as he was previously scheduled to visit India from April 20 to April 22. The cancellation of his India visit was attributed to pressing Tesla obligations, although reports had suggested that Musk was expected to make major announcements, including the establishment of a $2-3 billion EV manufacturing facility and the introduction of Starlink internet services in the country. Musk was also anticipated to meet with Prime Minister Modi and executives from various startups during his planned visit to India. However, his decision to prioritize Tesla obligations resulted in the postponement of his India visit, leaving many eagerly awaiting the potential future developments in this regard.
The possibility of Starlink’s implementation in Sri Lanka holds great promise for enhancing internet connectivity and fostering economic growth. The provision of reliable and affordable internet access to remote communities can empower individuals with access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the nation.
