Uber has emerged as the first aggregator to receive a license from Delhi’s Transport Department to operate Uber Shuttle service within the city. This initiative will form an integral part of the Delhi Premium Bus program, enabling passengers to secure seats on their desired routes in advance via the ‘Shuttle’ feature available on the Uber application. Additionally, the app offers users access to real-time updates regarding bus arrival times, current locations, and routes, with the option to book seats up to a week in advance. An official representing the Government of Delhi’s Transport Department expressed their support for this initiative, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing public transportation services and diversifying transportation options to streamline commuting experiences for Delhi’s residents. The official acknowledged Uber’s global expertise and technological capabilities and welcomed their contribution to elevating the commuting experience for the city’s inhabitants. This scheme initially underwent a pilot phase in Gurugram and has been operational in Kolkata since last year through an agreement with the local government. The program’s development aligns with the demands of the city and aims to provide support to daily bus commuters in the Delhi-NCR region. Uber maintains that this move contributes to reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. The company stated, ‘Uber Shuttle aims to provide demand-optimized mobility solutions utilizing private bus fleets, addressing road congestion and reducing carbon emissions by encouraging shared rides.’ The program seeks to mitigate traffic concerns and curb air pollution by promoting shared rides through the deployment of private bus fleets. Amit Deshpande, Head of Uber Shuttle in India, expressed his enthusiasm for the official launch of the service in Delhi following a successful pilot program that showcased a substantial demand for buses. He stated, ‘We are thrilled to officially introduce the convenience of Uber rides to buses in Delhi.’ Each shuttle bus will have the capacity to accommodate 19 to 50 passengers and will be operated by local fleet partners leveraging Uber’s technology.
