The Terry Fox Run, an international event that honors the legacy of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, is making its debut on the beautiful island of Langkawi. On July 6, 2024, the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi invites local residents and visitors to join this collective effort towards a future free from cancer. Participants can choose to complete either a 5 or 10-kilometer route, at their own pace, whether running, jogging, or walking to show their support for cancer research. As a non-competitive charity event, there will be no official timing. Supporters can also join the cause by purchasing Terry Fox Run 2024 t-shirts, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research Malaysia. Several team members from Four Seasons will participate in the run. The Terry Fox Run holds special significance as it traces its roots back to 1980 when Terry Fox, a 22-year-old who lost his leg to bone cancer, embarked on a 5,374-kilometer (3,339-mile) run across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Despite facing harsh weather conditions, he continued his Marathon of Hope until cancer spread to his lungs, forcing him to stop. He passed away the following year, having raised 24 million Canadian dollars for cancer research. Inspired by Terry’s bravery and vision of a world without cancer, Four Seasons founder Isadore Sharp committed to maintaining his legacy. In 1981, with the help of several sponsors, he organized the first Terry Fox Run, which saw over 300,000 participants. Today, more than 9,000 Terry Fox Memorial Runs occur worldwide annually, with Four Seasons supporting many of these events. “We are honored to host Langkawi’s inaugural Terry Fox Run and join this global movement of solidarity and hope. Every bit of support for cancer research brings us one step closer to a breakthrough,” says General Manager Ivan Giles, who will also be joining the event.
