Cornice Collapse on Mount Everest Highlights Overcrowding Concerns

Mount Everest, known as the highest peak in the world, has been making headlines recently due to a cornice collapse that nearly claimed the lives of four climbers. Vinayak Malla, an International Federation of Mountain Guides (IFMGA) guide, shared harrowing videos on Instagram showcasing the challenges his team faced during their descent.

According to Malla, the Everest summit ridge presented unusual conditions compared to his previous experiences, with an abundance of soft snow, numerous cornices, and concealed rocky sections. As the group navigated these hazards, they encountered a treacherous cornice collapse. Thankfully, the climbers were tethered to ropes and managed to self-rescue. However, the incident resulted in the disappearance of two climbers.

Overcrowding on Mount Everest has been a growing concern, contributing to traffic congestion and limited oxygen availability. Malla’s videos captured the chaotic and tense moments as climbers struggled to navigate the fixed lines. The guide played a crucial role in establishing a new route, allowing for a gradual resumption of the descent.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with mountaineering, particularly on a peak as formidable as Mount Everest. The overcrowding issue requires urgent attention to ensure the safety of climbers and preserve the pristine environment of the Himalayas.
