The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) has predicted that several states in North India will continue to experience intense heatwaves, with no respite from rainfall until the end of May. States such as Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan will remain dry for the next few days, as per the IMD’s rain forecast. However, some isolated rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad in the coming days. Uttarakhand may also receive isolated showers from May 25 to 31. In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning occurred in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. The IMD has issued a severe heatwave warning for most parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh until May 29. West Uttar Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh are also likely to experience severe heatwave conditions until May 28. Heatwave conditions have been prevailing in Gujarat since May 15 and in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan since May 17. On May 25, Phalodi in Rajasthan recorded the highest temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, while Barmer recorded the second highest at 48.8 degrees Celsius. The Met Department has also predicted heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Vidarbha, west Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and east Madhya Pradesh until May 29. East Uttar Pradesh may experience heatwave conditions till May 28, while Gujarat may continue to face heatwaves till May 26.
