The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on May 26th that the landfall process of Cyclone Remal had commenced over coastal areas of Bangladesh and neighboring West Bengal, India. The IMD projected that the landfall would continue for approximately four hours, with maximum wind speeds reaching 110-120 kmph. Speaking to news agency ANI, the IMD stated that the cyclone was expected to move northwards, impacting areas such as Sagar Islands (WB), Khepupara (Bangladesh), Canning (WB), and Mongla (Bangladesh). It was anticipated to cross the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts by midnight on the same day. In response to the approaching cyclone, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose convened an emergency review meeting. Governor Bose emphasized the preparedness of the state, including the establishment of a task force and the provision of shelter if necessary. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim also addressed the media, highlighting the measures taken to manage the aftermath of the cyclone, including the deployment of teams for water clearance and the activation of pumping stations. The Mayor urged citizens to prioritize safety and avoid staying in structures deemed hazardous by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Meanwhile, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim convened a meeting with borough teams to discuss preparations for managing the aftermath of the cyclone. He assured that water clearance and restoration of normalcy would be prioritized once the cyclone passed. The Mayor emphasized the presence of teams in every borough and the monitoring of the situation from a control room. He appealed to citizens to stay safe and adhere to safety guidelines. The Mayor also announced the availability of 480 pumps and dumpers for post-cyclone operations.
