In a devastating incident, a stone quarry collapse on the outskirts of Aizawl has claimed the lives of five individuals, with multiple others still missing. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning amid incessant rainfall, which has also triggered landslides in various parts of the state. The collapse occurred in an area between Melthum and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl around 6 am. While one body has been recovered, several others remain trapped beneath the rubble, according to police officials. The incessant rain has significantly hindered rescue operations, making it difficult to reach those trapped. Landslides caused by the heavy rainfall have also disrupted transportation routes, cutting off Aizawl from the rest of the nation due to a landslide on National Highway 6 at Hunthar. Intra-state highways have also been affected by the landslides, further complicating the situation. Due to the hazardous weather conditions, all schools in the state have been closed to ensure the safety of students. The unrelenting downpour continues to pose a challenge for rescue workers as they race against time to locate and rescue the missing individuals. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance to those affected by the calamity.
