Amidst the scorching summer heat, the Indian travel sector has flourished, witnessing a remarkable 40% increase in tourist activities compared to the previous summer, as reported by PTI. This surge is driven by an increased demand for leisure trips, with destinations offering cooler temperatures and serene landscapes experiencing a significant rise in popularity.
Hill stations, beach destinations, and tourist spots near cities have seen a surge in bookings, with families and solo travelers contributing to the increased travel activities. Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, Goa, Kerala, and the Northeast have emerged as popular destinations for those seeking respite from the summer heat.
The popularity of beach destinations is evident in the 53% of leisure bookings favoring such locations for May and June 2024. However, mountain escapes also hold significant appeal, accounting for 47% of leisure bookings, indicating a robust interest in both types of destinations.
Notably, the increase in air travel is partially attributed to the Election Commission’s efforts to encourage people to travel back to their home locations to vote. As a result, Srinagar, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and soothing weather, has become a sanctuary for those fleeing the oppressive heat engulfing much of North India, where temperatures have soared to record highs of 50 degrees Celsius.
The tourism industry is optimistic about sustained growth throughout the summer season, as individuals and families seek refuge from the scorching heat and embrace the opportunity to explore the diverse and captivating destinations that India offers.
