Mumbai Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road, connecting Marine Drive to Worli, will be open to the public by June 10. This announcement comes even as the first phase of the coastal road, inaugurated in March 2023, has been experiencing leakage issues.
The chief minister recently inspected the leakage at the southbound tunnel at the Marine Drive end. He informed reporters that leakages had been detected in two to three expansion joints of the coastal road and that they would be plugged using polymer grouting. To prevent future water leakage, the chief minister proposed utilizing polymer grouting for all 25 joints on both sides of the tunnel, even during the upcoming monsoon season, which is expected to begin around June 10.
Despite the ongoing repair work, vehicular movement on the coastal road will not be affected. Amidst reports of the leak, users on social media have raised concerns about infrastructure maintenance and safety measures. Following the inauguration of the first phase of the project, Shiv Sena UBT leader Aditya Thackeray had alleged that it had been inaugurated in a hurry to gain credit before the elections.
The 53-km-long coastal road project, estimated to cost around 12,721 crore, will connect to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and extend to Dahisar. The project’s construction began on October 13, 2018.
