The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) is proactively promoting the destination’s safety record amidst a significant resurgence in tourism. This strategic approach aims to differentiate Antigua and Barbuda as a secure oasis within the Caribbean.
During the recent Caribbean Travel Marketplace, ABTA CEO Colin James acknowledged isolated crime incidents involving young Antiguan men. However, he emphasized that overall crime rates remain low, and visitor safety is of utmost importance to the ABTA. James reiterated the pivotal role tourism plays in the nation’s economy, underscoring safety as a paramount priority.
In light of regional travel advisories issued by the US government, James’ comments addressed the concerns raised. While recognizing these concerns, the ABTA provided data indicating minimal long-term impact on visitor safety in the region.
Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry has witnessed a remarkable upswing. The first quarter of 2024 saw an impressive 11% increase in flights, with major airlines such as American Airlines, Delta, and British Airways augmenting or confirming their services to the island. This positive trend is projected to continue as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host several prominent events, including a prestigious international conference and captivating cricket tournaments. With most hotels and guesthouses fully booked for these events, the outlook for Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry is decidedly promising.
