Edmontonians may notice soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Edmonton walking the city’s streets this weekend as part of a training exercise. Members of the 1st Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (1 PPCLI) will be conducting training throughout the Edmonton region, including St. Albert and Sherwood Park, from Saturday until Tuesday. The training aims to ensure that the soldiers can effectively carry out security-oriented tasks while minimizing public attention. Military personnel will be traveling to various locations in civilian rental vehicles and wearing civilian attire. In some cases, they will be carrying 9mm pistol holsters with rubber or wooden pistols. Defence officials emphasized that the training is intended to develop soldiers’ skills as security escorts capable of protecting designated officials overseas. The troops will strictly adhere to all civilian laws and regulations. Edmonton police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been informed of the training, which is not expected to impact residents.
