After years of controversy surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s departure from the Royal family, discussions have emerged regarding the potential removal of their royal titles. While the couple has formally stepped back from their duties and dropped the ‘His Royal Highness’ titles, they have maintained the ‘Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ titles. Several experts have advocated for the official revocation of these titles given the couple’s detachment from their royal responsibilities.
According to a Hindustan Times report, an act of parliament would be necessary to officially remove the ‘Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ titles. Additionally, Harry could lose his titles if he successfully obtains US citizenship, as it requires him to ‘renounce all allegiance to any foreign prince, state or sovereign,’ as reported by Daily Express.
Should Meghan lose her ‘Duchess of Sussex’ title, she would still retain a royal title albeit an unusual one. According to royal commentator Ingrid Seward, if she loses her title, the American actor would still be referred to as ‘Princess Henry.’ ‘I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because, if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood, and Meghan, instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, would be Princess Henry,’ Daily Express quoted Ingrid Seward’s comments.
There have been instances where Meghan Markle and Harry have leveraged their royal influence to secure lucrative partnerships with companies such as Netflix and Spotify. Moreover, Meghan Markle continues to use the ‘Duchess of Sussex’ title on public platforms. Recently, the couple launched their website, American Riviera Orchard, with Meghan’s royal coat of arms. The official Instagram handle of the venture also refers to Meghan as ‘the Duchess of Sussex.’
