Incessant rainfall and landslides have brought chaos to Sikkim over the past few days, leaving thousands of residents stranded and struggling to cope. The relentless monsoon season has proven to be a formidable adversary, with heavy downpours wreaking havoc across the state.
One of the most significant consequences of the extreme weather was the destruction of a vital road connecting Mangan district to other parts of Sikkim. The road was completely washed away by a massive landslide, effectively isolating the district and severely disrupting transportation links. The news agency PTI shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) depicting the devastating aftermath, showing the road completely collapsed near Lal Bazaar.
The visuals highlight the extent of the damage caused by the relentless rain and landslides. The floodwaters have inundated Mangan district and surrounding areas, creating widespread waterlogging and further exacerbating the situation. Tragically, approximately 1,200 to 1,400 students have been stranded in Mangan district, cut off from their homes and families.
In response to the crisis, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods. This financial assistance aims to provide some relief to the affected families during this difficult time.
As the monsoon season continues, the people of Sikkim face the daunting task of navigating the aftermath of the devastating floods and landslides. Emergency services are working tirelessly to rescue stranded individuals and restore essential infrastructure, but the full extent of the damage and the challenges ahead remain significant.
