Neeraj Chopra Returns to Turku for Paavo Nurmi Games: A Look at His Upcoming Javelin Throw Competition

The 2024 Continental Gold Tour continues with the Paavo Nurmi Games, set to take place at the Paavo Nurmi Stadium in Turku, Finland. The track and field event will feature a highly anticipated Men’s Javelin Throw competition, with none other than Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and World Champion, participating. Chopra will face a formidable lineup of contenders, including Max Dehning of Germany, the youngest member of the coveted 90m club and the current season leader. Other key athletes in the competition include Anderson Peters of Grenada, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, and Oliver Helander of Finland.

Chopra’s return to Turku holds special significance, as he previously finished runner-up in the 2022 edition with a throw of 89.30m. Helander emerged victorious in that competition. This event marks Chopra’s first competitive outing since the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships held in Bhubaneswar. The 26-year-old athlete withdrew from the Ostrava Golden Spike last month as a precautionary measure after experiencing discomfort in his adductor muscle group.

Chopra, aiming for a repeat of his golden success at the Paris Olympics, commenced his season at the Doha Diamond League in May, securing a second-place finish with a throw of 88.36m. He then went on to claim the gold medal at the Federation Cup, albeit with a less impressive effort of 82.27m. Following the Paavo Nurmi Games, Chopra is scheduled to compete at the Paris Diamond League on July 7th. To avoid an overly demanding schedule leading up to the Olympics, he has opted out of the National Inter-State Athletics in Panchkula.

Regarding his future competition plans, Chopra stated after the Federation Cup, “Further competition schedule will be decided later according to situation and my body. Otherwise, I will go to Paris from there (after competing in Turku).”
