Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf found himself at the center of controversy after a video of his heated exchange with a group of men went viral online. The incident occurred after Pakistan’s disappointing early exit from the T20 World Cup, held in the USA and West Indies. Pakistan’s performance had been marred by a shock defeat to newcomer USA and a crushing loss to India.
The video, which quickly spread on social media, showed Rauf walking with his wife when he encountered a group of people. While the exact nature of their conversation remains unclear, reports suggest the group was allegedly taunting him about Pakistan’s poor performance in the tournament.
Rauf seemingly lost his composure and rushed towards the men. His wife attempted to stop him, but Rauf removed his slippers and continued his approach before being restrained by one of the individuals. The video also captured one of the fans saying, “Ek picture maangi hai bas (All I wanted was one picture with you).”
In a statement posted on X, Rauf explained his side of the story: “I decided to not bring this on social media, but now that the video is out, I feel it is necessary to address the situation. As public figures, we are open to receiving all kinds of feedback from the public. They are entitled to support or criticize us. Nevertheless, when it comes to my parent and my family, I will not hesitate to respond accordingly. It is important to show respect towards people and their families, irrespective of their professions.”
Despite the incident, Pakistan salvaged some pride in the tournament by winning their final group match against Ireland. Their fate had already been sealed after the game between USA and Ireland was abandoned due to rain.
