Veteran Photojournalist Nissar Ahmad Passes Away in Srinagar

Renowned photojournalist Nissar Ahmad, a familiar face in the media landscape of Kashmir for the past 25 years, breathed his last in Srinagar on Wednesday, succumbing to cancer. He was 59. Ahmad’s health had been deteriorating for some time, leading to his hospitalization at the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) a few days prior. His condition took a turn for the worse on Tuesday, and he passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday afternoon.

Leaving behind a legacy of dedication and impactful work, Ahmad is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. He joined the media fraternity on August 1, 1998, and quickly made a name for himself with his unwavering commitment to his profession. His final rites were held at his residence in Srinagar’s Natipora area, where he was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard. Hundreds of locals joined the funeral prayers, reflecting the profound respect and admiration he held within the community.

His passing has been met with widespread grief and tributes from the journalistic community in Kashmir, recognizing his significant contributions to the field. Ahmad was particularly renowned for his dedication to sports coverage in the Kashmir valley, meticulously documenting the region’s talent and the growth of its sports scene.

Prominent political figures in Jammu and Kashmir have also expressed their condolences, acknowledging Ahmad’s impact and the void his absence will leave. Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, in a message on X, wrote, “Nissar was a regular presence at events and press conferences over the years. His absence will be greatly felt. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. My condolences to his family and colleagues.”

Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti also shared her grief, stating, “Very sorry to hear about the passing away of veteran photojournalist Nissar Ahmed. May Allah give his family and loved ones strength to bear this loss.” CPI (M) leader M.Y. Tarigami similarly extended his heartfelt condolences to Ahmad’s family.

Nissar Ahmad’s departure leaves a significant void in the media landscape of Kashmir, but his legacy of dedication, professionalism, and contributions to sports will continue to inspire generations to come.
