The Madras High Court is set to hear an urgent petition on the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy tomorrow, June 21st. This follows the tragic incident where over 30 people died and more than 60 are still hospitalized after consuming tainted liquor. The petition was filed by AIADMK advocates seeking immediate action on the matter.
The incident, which occurred in the Kallakurichi district, located 250 km from Chennai, has sparked widespread outrage and concern. Since Wednesday, over 100 individuals have been admitted to hospitals suffering from vomiting, stomach ache, and diarrhea.
In response to the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government has taken swift action. At least 10 officials, including the district’s collector and police chief, have been suspended over the illicit liquor incident. The state government has also announced financial aid of ₹10 lakhs for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those undergoing treatment.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability. He stated, “Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it.”
To ensure a thorough investigation, a one-man commission, comprising former judge Justice B Gokuldas, has been appointed to probe the matter. The commission is expected to submit its report within three months.
