D&E Journey, a sustainable community-driven initiative based in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, China, has recently been awarded the inaugural Green Globe certification. Committed to cultural preservation, conservation, and community empowerment, D&E Journey embodies the principle that the law of the jungle does not represent the dominance of the strong over the weak but rather symbiosis and incorporation.
In the lush landscapes of Xishuangbanna, the widespread cultivation of rubber trees over decades has severely impacted the rainforest ecosystem. Furthermore, since 2013, the declining price of rubber has significantly reduced villagers’ incomes, making it challenging for them to sustain their livelihoods.
Recognizing this critical situation, D&E Journey, in collaboration with the Xishuangbanna Tropical Rainforest Conservation Foundation, launched a pilot project in Jino Town in 2018 titled ‘Returning rubber trees to rainforest and rainforest reforestation.’ This initiative encourages villagers to replace rubber trees with a diverse selection of native tree species. The foundation facilitates fundraising events involving the general public, providing financial support to villagers for sapling production and maintenance.
To mitigate the detrimental impact on the rainforest and reduce the dependence of the Jino people on rubber cultivation, D&E Journey supports the development of ecological tourism initiatives. These include rainforest trekking and cultural experiences with the Jino ethnic minority groups, offering alternative income streams and promoting environmental awareness. The Green Globe certification signifies D&E Journey’s commitment to sustainable practices and their dedication to preserving the delicate balance of the rainforest ecosystem while empowering local communities.
