In 2017, we added a pool to our home, creating a new outdoor living space that needed a sound system. I initially opted for a pair of Sonos Play:1 speakers, which have been weathering the elements (mostly) for almost a decade. While they’ve held up surprisingly well, I’ve recently switched to Beats Pill speakers for my outdoor setup, and here’s why.
There are several reasons why Sonos speakers might not be the best choice for an outdoor environment. Florida’s humidity and occasional deep freezes can take a toll. Additionally, if you’re not already wired for electricity outside, Sonos speakers require plugging in. For those reasons, I’ve embraced the new Beats Pill speakers. These portable Bluetooth speakers are reasonably priced at $149 each, offering a significant cost savings compared to Sonos’ offerings. They also come with the advantage of portability, providing 24 hours of battery life and a compact design that allows them to be easily moved indoors when necessary.
One of the most important factors for me was the IP67 water and dust resistance rating. This ensures that the speakers can withstand the unpredictable Florida weather. While the sound quality might not be quite as impressive as Sonos, it’s perfectly adequate for background music. And the ability to pair two Beats Pills in stereo makes a world of difference for creating a more immersive listening experience.
I’ve also found that the Beats Pill’s straightforward Bluetooth connectivity is a major advantage. Unlike Sonos, which has been plagued by app issues and connectivity problems this summer, the Beats Pill consistently delivers a seamless experience. Even though the Beats Pill may not reach the same volume as Sonos, its ease of use and reliability make it a more appealing choice for my needs.
Ultimately, for my outdoor setup in 2024, the Beats Pill provides a compelling combination of affordability, portability, weather resistance, and reliable performance. It’s a hassle-free Bluetooth speaker that does its job without the added complexities of a larger ecosystem.
