Tensions boiled over after Turkey secured a 2-1 victory against Czechia in their Euro 2024 Group F match at the Volksparkstadion Hamburg. Following the final whistle, a heated altercation ensued between players from both teams. Turkish youngster Arda Guler found himself at the center of the commotion, leading to a swift yellow card from the referee. Czech captain Tomas Soucek also received a caution during the heated exchange.
The night took a further turn for the worse for Czechia, already eliminated following Georgia’s win over Portugal, as forward Tomas Chory was shown a red card by referee Istvan Kovacs. Earlier, Czechia had already faced disciplinary problems when striker Patrik Schick was given a yellow card while sitting on the bench.
Hakan Calhanoglou’s opening goal for Turkey further dimmed Czechia’s hopes of qualification, especially after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s early goal in the other Group F game between Georgia and Portugal. Czechia’s woes deepened when they were reduced to 10-men in the 20th minute. Soucek managed to equalize after the hour mark, but Cenk Tosun’s stoppage time goal sealed Turkey’s victory. Turkey will now face Group D topper Austria on July 2.
