A concerning number of wedding guests admit to driving under the influence of alcohol the morning after the celebration. A new survey, commissioned by Direct Line, revealed that one in six wedding guests admit to drink-driving the morning after a marriage celebration. The research also highlights the prevalence of excessive alcohol consumption at weddings, with nearly half (47%) of wedding-goers treated to a free bar.
The survey, conducted among 2,000 adults, found that a staggering 29% of attendees who drink will consume 16 or more alcoholic beverages at a wedding. More than a fifth (21%) of men admitted to initially planning to avoid drinking alcohol but ultimately changing their mind and driving home under the influence.
The insurer, Direct Line, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness of the dangers of morning-after drink driving, particularly during spring and summer wedding season. Matt Pernet, representing Direct Line, stated, “As one of the UK’s leading motor insurers, we’re on a mission to help make roads safer for everyone. With people planning to attend spring and summer weddings, raising awareness of the dangers of drink-driving the morning after is incredibly important.”
The research also found that a fifth of men surveyed consumed over half of their recommended daily calorie allowance in beer at a wedding, over just five drinks. Pernet added, “We want to remind the nation to think twice before getting into a car, whether they themselves or their driver might still be over the limit.”
The study underscores the significant risk associated with morning-after drink driving and the importance of responsible alcohol consumption at weddings and other celebrations. It serves as a reminder for guests to be mindful of their alcohol intake and to consider alternative transportation options to ensure their own safety and the safety of others on the road.
