WestJet has announced an additional 235 flight cancellations due to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) strike. The union has opted to strike despite a Ministerial mandate for arbitration, leaving WestJet with no choice but to continue cancelling flights to maintain operational stability. The airline expressed deep disappointment and frustration with the situation, highlighting the negative impact on passengers who are missing important events and stranded without flights home.
WestJet’s President, Diederik Pen, described the situation as devastating and attributed the disruption directly to the union’s actions. He stated that they are actively seeking intervention and working tirelessly to manage a stable network while reducing operations in a safe and controlled manner.
Significant disruptions are expected by the end of June 29th, as WestJet continues to park aircraft at stations across Canada. The airline has already cancelled a significant number of flights on June 27th and 28th, with the total number of cancellations expected to be substantial by the end of the day on June 29th.
