Kartik Karkera, a 27-year-old doctor from Mumbai, is proving that you can excel in both medicine and athletics. Despite his demanding career as an orthopedic surgeon, Karkera has emerged as a prominent middle-distance runner in India, setting personal bests and aiming for the top.
His journey began in Russia while pursuing his MBBS degree. Karkera, initially a studious and academically inclined individual, discovered a hidden talent for running during his second year of college. He started participating in local events and competitions, eventually drawing attention with his performances.
Balancing his demanding medical career and training schedule was a constant challenge for Karkera. He would wake up early, train before his classes, and find time for runs even during breaks. His dedication and resilience paid off, and he began to compete at the national level in Russia.
In 2023, after completing his post-graduation in orthopedic surgery from Moscow University, Karkera chose to return to India, determined to compete for his homeland. He joined the renowned coach Vijender Singh, who has guided some of India’s top women long-distance runners.
Karkera’s dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. He has already achieved significant milestones, including setting a new personal best in the 1500m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. He has also competed in national events in Russia, even rubbing shoulders with Olympic athletes.
While balancing his medical career with athletics is a struggle, Karkera is determined to achieve his goal of becoming India’s top runner and qualifying for the 2026 Asian Games.
