Experienced batter Sikandar Raza has been appointed as captain of a youthful Zimbabwean team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against reigning world champions India. The series is set to commence on July 6th.
Zimbabwe Cricket announced in a release that Belgium-born Antum Naqvi has also been included in the squad, but his final inclusion hinges on the confirmation of his citizenship status. Naqvi, born to Pakistani parents in Brussels, Belgium, moved to Australia subsequently. He was considered for selection after expressing his desire to represent Zimbabwe in international cricket and applying for naturalization.
Zimbabwe, under the guidance of new head coach Justin Sammons, is looking to rebuild after failing to qualify for the recently concluded T20 World Cup. The team’s selection reflects this aim, featuring a young core of players. At 38 years old, Raza, with 86 T20I appearances to his name, is the most experienced player in the squad. Following close behind is Luke Jongwe, 29, who has participated in 63 T20I matches.
Other seasoned players in the team include pace bowlers Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, who have played 52 and 51 T20I matches respectively. Veterans Craig Ervine and Sean Williams were not selected for the series. Ryan Burl, Joylord Gumbie, and Ainsley Ndlovu were also omitted from the team.
The full Zimbabwe squad for the series against India is as follows: Sikandar Raza (captain), Akram Faraz, Bennett Brian, Campbell Johnathan, Chatara Tendai, Jongwe Luke, Kaia Innocent, Madande Clive, Madhevere Wessly, Marumani Tadiwanashe, Masakadza Wellington, Mavuta Brandon, Muzarabani Blessing, Myers Dion, Naqvi Antum, Ngarava Richard, Shumba Milton.
