David Goffin has secured a place in the main draw of Wimbledon 2024 as a Lucky Loser after two-time champion Andy Murray withdrew from the singles competition due to injury.
Goffin, a two-time quarterfinalist at the grass-court Grand Slam, will now face Czechia’s Tomas Machac in the opening round.
Murray, who underwent surgery just over a week ago, announced his decision to withdraw from the singles event, stating that despite working hard on his recovery, he wasn’t able to be ready in time.
“Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year,” a statement from Murray’s team was quoted by Wimbledon.
“As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed but has confirmed that he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie (his elder brother) and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time.”
Goffin, currently ranked 83rd in the world, reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2019 and 2022. He lost a tough match to Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in the final qualifying round, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Despite the disappointment of losing in the final round of qualifying, Goffin’s entry into the main draw through a Lucky Loser spot will give him a chance to compete at Wimbledon once again.
