Assam is facing a severe flood situation, impacting over 21.13 lakh people across 29 districts, with the death toll rising to 52. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the waterlogged areas on Friday to assess the situation. He inspected the inundated areas in Dibrugarh and interacted with the flood-affected victims. While asserting that the water levels have gone down, indicating improvement in the situation, he acknowledged that areas where embankments have been breached continue to be impacted by the floods. Sarma highlighted the need for smaller equipment to clean drains in the Dibrugarh area, mentioning encroachment issues that will be addressed after the water recedes.
At least six people, including two children, drowned in the last 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The floods have also affected 11,20,165 animals. The administration has established approximately 515 relief camps and distribution centres for over 3.86 lakh people affected by the floods.
The Kaziranga National Park has been severely impacted by the floods, resulting in the death of 31 animals, including 23 hog deer that drowned in the floodwaters. Seven more hog deer died while under care, according to reports from the park.
Morigaon remains the worst affected district, with over 55,000 people still recovering from the deluge. Thousands of villagers are taking shelter on embankments and roads after floodwaters entered their homes. Chandini Devi, from the Bhuragaon area in Morigaon district, shared that her family has been living in a makeshift tent on the embankment for the past four days. Dipen Deka, another flood-affected villager, described the submergence of their area, stating that many people have lost valuable goods and household items due to the flooding.
Other affected districts include Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, and Bongaigaon. Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora visited flood-affected areas in Morigaon district on Thursday and interacted with the victims.
