Sanath Jayasuriya Appointed as Sri Lanka’s New Head Coach

Sri Lanka has appointed former captain and all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya as their new head coach. This follows the resignation of Chris Silverwood, who stepped down after the team’s disappointing performance at the T20 World Cup.

Jayasuriya, a legend in Sri Lankan cricket, has a rich history with the national team. He represented Sri Lanka in 586 international matches across all formats, scoring 42 centuries and taking 440 wickets. He captained the team in both Test and ODI formats, and also served as a national selector.

Sri Lanka Cricket has requested Jayasuriya to take over the coaching reins ahead of a crucial series against India this month and Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of England in August. He will assume his new role after the conclusion of the ongoing Lanka Premier League on July 21.

Silverwood, who previously coached England, joined Sri Lanka in April 2022 and led the team to victory in the T20 Asia Cup later that year. He also guided them to the final of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023. However, the team’s performance at the T20 World Cup in 2022 and the 50-over World Cup in 2023 was below par.

The appointment of Jayasuriya marks a new chapter for Sri Lankan cricket. With his vast experience and knowledge of the game, he is expected to bring fresh ideas and strategies to the team. As a Sri Lankan legend, he is likely to inspire the players and help them achieve success in the upcoming challenges.
