Paraguay Sacks Coach Daniel Garnero After Copa America Disappointment

Daniel Garnero, the Argentine coach leading Paraguay’s national football team, has been relieved of his duties following a dismal Copa America performance. The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) confirmed the decision on Monday, stating that the team’s poor showing in the tournament led to the termination of Garnero’s contract.

Paraguay faced elimination in the first round of the Copa America, losing their opening match 2-1 to Colombia. Subsequent defeats against Brazil (4-1) and Costa Rica (2-1) sealed their fate.

Garnero, 55, assumed the coaching role in September 2023, succeeding his fellow Argentine, Guillermo Barros Schelotto. However, his tenure was short-lived, marked by the disappointing Copa America campaign.

Furthermore, Paraguay’s performance in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup has been lackluster. Sitting in seventh place with five points from six games in the 10-team standings, the team faces a challenging road to qualification. The APF’s decision to part ways with Garnero signals a desire for a change in direction as Paraguay seeks to improve their fortunes on the international stage.
