Delhi to Become World’s Most Populous City by 2028: UN Report

Delhi is poised to claim the title of the world’s most populous city by 2028, according to the latest United Nations World Urbanisation Prospects report. The report reveals that Delhi currently holds the position of the second most populous city globally, with a staggering 33.8 million inhabitants. Delhi’s ascent to the top is further underscored by the fact that it currently ranks among the top ten most populous cities alongside Mumbai, which boasts a population of 21.6 million, securing the ninth spot worldwide.

Looking ahead, the UN report projects that by 2030, the world will be home to 43 megacities, defined as cities with a population exceeding 10 million. These megacities will predominantly emerge in developing countries. The report also suggests that by 2050, a significant two out of every three individuals will reside in cities or urban centers.

The burgeoning urban population presents a myriad of challenges for many countries, encompassing the provision of housing, transportation, energy systems, and other vital infrastructure. Ensuring access to employment and essential services, such as education and healthcare, is another key concern.

India, currently the world’s most populous nation, is projected to reach its peak population by 2062, reaching a projected 1.701 billion inhabitants, according to the UN Population Prospects report. The report highlights that India is expected to maintain its position as the world’s most populous country until the end of the century.

To raise awareness about population-related issues and the challenges associated with the growing global population, World Population Day has been observed annually on July 11 since 1989.
