India Post, the nation’s largest postal network service, has announced the recruitment of 44,228 vacancies for the position of Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS). The recruitment drive aims to fill roles as Branch Postmaster (BPM) and Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) / Dak Sevak for the financial year 2025.
Applications for these positions are open online through the official website, indiapostgdsonline.gov.in, from July 15th to August 5th, 2024. The salary for the positions is set at ₹ 10,000-24,470 per month for ABPM / GDS and ₹ 12,000-29,380 for BPM.
The recruitment drive comes amidst positive employment growth in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reports that the country added 4.67 crore jobs in FY24, bringing the total number of provisional jobs to 64.33 crore, an increase from 59.67 crore in FY23. This growth in employment is significantly higher than estimates from private surveys that indicate a high unemployment rate in the country.
According to the RBI data, India’s employment grew by 6 per cent in FY24, a notable increase from the 3.2 per cent growth observed in FY23. Citibank data suggests that a 7 per cent growth in the economy would generate between 80 lakh and 90 lakh jobs in India. Currently, the country needs between 1.1 crore and 1.2 crore jobs.
To apply for the India Post GDS positions, candidates must be between 18 and 40 years of age and possess a Class 10 certificate. They must also provide their Secondary School Examination Pass Certificate showing pass marks in Mathematics and English from a government-recognized school board. The recruitment process involves three stages: registration, application fee payment, and online application.
