FIFA Investigates Argentina Players’ Racist Chant Aimed at France’s Mbappe

FIFA is currently investigating a video circulating on social media that showcases members of the Argentina national team engaging in a chant directed at French players, specifically targeting Kylian Mbappe’s African heritage. The French Football Federation (FFF) has condemned the video, labeling it “racist and discriminatory,” and has filed a formal complaint with FIFA.

The video, posted by Argentina forward Enzo Fernandez on Instagram, surfaced amidst the team’s celebratory mood following their 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America. In the video, Argentina players can be heard singing about Mbappe’s African ancestry, a gesture that has been widely criticized.

A FIFA spokesperson issued a statement addressing the incident, stating that FIFA is aware of the video and is currently investigating the matter. The statement emphasized FIFA’s strong condemnation of any form of discrimination, be it from players, fans, or officials.

Fernandez later took to social media to apologize for his actions, acknowledging that he was “caught up in the euphoria of our celebrations.” He further stated that the song included “highly offensive language” and that there was “absolutely no excuse” for the words used.

Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, also weighed in on the incident, describing the video as “uninhibited racism.”

Argentina’s Vice President, Victoria Villarruel, defended Fernandez and the team, dismissing the accusations as the actions of a “colonialist” country. She asserted that Argentina would not tolerate being intimidated by a colonialist country for a song on the pitch or for speaking truth.

The Office of Argentina President Javier Milei announced the removal of Julio Garro, the undersecretary for sports, for suggesting that Argentina captain Lionel Messi apologize for the chants. The presidential office emphasized that no government can dictate what the Argentine National Team, a World Champion and twice champion of America, or any citizen should comment on, think, or do.

Fernandez’s club, Chelsea, issued a statement condemning all forms of discriminatory behavior, emphasizing their pride in being a diverse and inclusive club welcoming people from all cultures, communities, and identities.

This incident follows a pattern of racial abuse directed at Mbappe and other players of African descent on the France team after their loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. The abuse prompted a senior French cabinet minister to call for a FIFA investigation. The recent events highlight a concerning issue of racial discrimination in football and the need for stronger measures to address it.
