Landslides Block Karnataka’s National Highway 75, Stranding Vehicles

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Karnataka, causing multiple landslides that have blocked National Highway 75, the vital connection between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. This has left numerous vehicles stranded and forced authorities to implement traffic diversions. While restoration efforts are underway on National Highway 75, vehicles traveling from Hassan to Bengaluru are being redirected to Mysuru and Madikeri to alleviate congestion. The movement of heavy vehicles has also been halted at Charmadi Ghat. Authorities have issued a warning to tourists, advising them to exercise caution as rains are expected to persist for the next four days.

One vehicle was caught in a landslide near Doddathappale village along the Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 75. Local villagers bravely rescued the occupants trapped inside the car, as reported by Hindustan Times. Multiple landslides have also been reported along the Shiradi Ghat stretch due to heavy rainfall in the Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district, significantly disrupting traffic flow. Scores of vehicles are stranded, and local police are diligently working to reroute traffic.

Meanwhile, National Highway 275, which connects Sampaje and Madikeri, has also been closed due to the looming threat of landslides and rockfalls. As a precautionary measure, the restriction will be enforced daily until July 22, from 8 pm to 6 am the following day, according to the Hindustan Times report.

Earlier this week, the devastating impact of heavy rains in Karnataka’s Uttar Kannada district resulted in a massive landslide that tragically claimed the lives of four people and left three others missing. The landslide’s force caused ripples in the overflowing Gangavalli river, and four houses in Ulliver village were destroyed, with vehicles being washed away. As reported by Deccan Herald, approximately 1500 people residing on the banks have been relocated to safer locations.
