Heavy Rains and Red Alerts Issued Across India: IMD Warns of Extreme Precipitation

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stark warning for heavy rainfall across various parts of India, with a red alert signifying extreme precipitation in Telangana, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra on Saturday, July 20th. The department has also issued orange alerts for several other states, including Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. This heightened alert system is in response to a low-pressure depression that is projected to traverse north-westwards and cross the Odisha coast near Puri as a depression during the early morning hours.

Following this development, the IMD has issued rainfall warnings in Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Considering the rough to very rough sea conditions in the coastal areas bordering the Bay of Bengal, a fisherman warning is in place to ensure safety at sea.

The weather department has forecasted extremely heavy rainfall in Goa, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra on July 20th. The state of Gujarat might experience heavy downpours on July 21st and 22nd. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Tamil Nadu on July 20th and for Madhya Pradesh until July 23rd.

In Northwest India, heavy precipitation warnings are in place for Rajasthan on July 21st, Himachal Pradesh on July 22nd and 23rd, and Uttarakhand until July 22nd. The IMD’s weather report dated July 19th further states that heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya until July 24th and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on July 20th and 21st. The press release adds that light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, and Northeast India until July 24th.

In Telangana, heavy rains have already lashed the region, resulting in flooding at a rivulet. This flooding led to 40 people being stranded in agricultural fields due to a breach. Disaster management personnel utilized two helicopters to rescue the stranded individuals. They were transported to a relief camp in the Bhadradri-Kothagudem district, as reported by PTI.
