French Armed Forces to Lead Security for Paris Olympics

The security operation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics will be spearheaded by the French armed forces, specifically under the auspices of Operation Sentinelle. General Thierry Burkhard, the French Chief of Defence Staff, has stated that the military’s involvement is “completely logical” given the magnitude and sensitivity of the event. He emphasizes the importance of meticulous planning, acknowledging the likelihood of last-minute adjustments due to the nature of such a large-scale operation.

General Burkhard’s plans currently call for 15,000 troops to be deployed as part of Operation Sentinelle. These troops will be responsible for safeguarding vital transport hubs and key routes leading to the Olympic venues. The Sentinelle force was originally established in 2015 following a series of deadly Islamic extremist attacks in France. The country has faced multiple attacks against its armed forces in Paris since then, including at least four in 2017.

In addition to the military presence, Paris will deploy a significant police force, with around 30,000 officers on duty daily throughout the Games. This number will peak at 45,000 for the opening ceremony, which will take place on the Seine river. Private security firms will handle access control and security within the cordoned-off areas.

The 2012 London Olympics witnessed a security scare when private security company G4S failed to provide the required number of security guards, forcing the British government to deploy an additional 3,000 troops just days before the Games began. With an anticipated 15 million visitors attending the Paris Games, the French security forces will face a considerable challenge in maintaining the required security standards while managing the massive crowds.
