A shocking incident occurred in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, where two women protesting road construction were partially buried when murrum was dumped on them from a truck. The incident took place in Hinota Jorot village, falling under the jurisdiction of Mangawa police station. The protest stemmed from a family dispute over co-owned land. The women, identified as Mamta Pandey and Asha Pandey, were demonstrating against the construction of the road when the truck driver, allegedly in a fit of rage, unloaded the murrum onto them. A video of the incident went viral on social media, highlighting the brutal nature of the attack.
The Additional Superintendent of Police, Vivek Lal, confirmed that the women were indeed protesting and that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances and hold the perpetrators accountable. He assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the evidence gathered. The ADG (Law and Order), Jaideep Prasad, attributed the incident to the ongoing family dispute over the co-owned land, citing the complaint filed by Asha Pandey. Asha Pandey detailed the events, stating that she and her sister-in-law were peacefully protesting against the construction on their shared land when the truck driver unloaded the murrum onto them. Villagers intervened to rescue the women, and the police swiftly seized the dumper truck and arrested one of the individuals involved.
The police are actively pursuing the remaining two suspects, who are currently absconding. The incident triggered strong reactions from the opposition, with Congress leaders condemning the BJP government’s handling of the situation. Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath demanded a thorough investigation and severe penalties for the perpetrators, arguing that such incidents tarnish Madhya Pradesh’s reputation globally. MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari raised concerns about women’s safety in the state under the BJP-led government, citing statistics on crimes against women and criticizing the administration’s failure to curb such incidents.
Responding to the outcry, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav took swift action. After reviewing the viral video, he instructed the district administration and police to take immediate steps to address the situation. He assured that those responsible for crimes against women would face severe consequences, emphasizing the state’s commitment to citizen security, especially for women. The women involved in the incident were discharged from the hospital after receiving medical treatment, Yadav confirmed. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater protection of women’s rights and safety in Madhya Pradesh and highlights the urgent need to address the root causes of such violent incidents.
