President Joe Biden surprised the nation on Sunday by announcing his decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. In a letter addressed to the American people, Biden stated that while he initially intended to seek reelection, he believes it’s in the best interest of his party and the country to focus solely on fulfilling his duties as President for the remainder of his term.
Biden highlighted the significant progress made during his presidency, citing the robust economic recovery, historic investments in infrastructure, lowering prescription drug costs, expanding affordable healthcare, providing support to veterans, passing gun safety legislation, appointing the first African American woman to the Supreme Court, and enacting the most significant climate legislation in history. He expressed pride in America’s current standing as a leader on the global stage.
He also acknowledged the challenges faced during his presidency, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. He expressed gratitude for the American people’s unwavering support throughout these difficult times, stating that together they overcame these obstacles, protected and preserved democracy, and strengthened alliances worldwide.
Biden concluded his letter by reaffirming his belief in America’s strength and potential, urging citizens to remember the shared values that unite the nation. He expressed his deepest gratitude to those who worked for his reelection campaign and acknowledged the remarkable partnership he shared with Vice President Kamala Harris. He will address the nation later this week to further explain his decision.
