Bihar Assembly Session Heats Up with Opposition Demands for Special Status

The Bihar Assembly’s five-day monsoon session, which commenced on Monday, July 22, has been thrown into turmoil with opposition parties demanding special status for the state. Leaders of the opposition staged a protest on Tuesday at the assembly premises, reiterating their demand for the special category status. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar is facing significant pressure from the opposition Mahagathbandhan coalition, who are vocal in their support for the special status. This demand for special status is expected to dominate the session, leading to a heated political slugfest.

The assembly session was adjourned until 12 pm on Tuesday amid the protests. The first day of the session saw Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary table the first supplementary budget for the current financial year. However, the focus quickly shifted to the opposition’s demands for special status, setting the stage for a contentious week in the Bihar Assembly.

Speaker Nand Kishor Yadav administered the oath of office to Independent MLA Shankar Singh on the first day of the session. The monsoon session is expected to be a tense affair, with the opposition’s demand for special status likely to be the central issue of debate.
