The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, indicating very heavy rainfall, for Gujarat and Maharashtra. An orange alert, predicting heavy downpours, has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, and Goa. These alerts signal the potential for significant rainfall across these regions, raising concerns about flooding and related risks.
In Gujarat, where flooding has already claimed eight lives on July 24, the death toll due to rain-related incidents has climbed to 61. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to the affected areas to manage the situation and provide assistance.
The IMD forecasts “extremely heavy rainfall” in Gujarat and Maharashtra today, with “very heavy rainfall” expected for Madhya Pradesh today, Goa till July 27, Maharashtra till tomorrow, and Gujarat over the next three days. This concentrated rainfall could lead to widespread flooding and disruption in these areas.
Moving to northwest India, the weather agency predicts “heavy rainfall” in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan until July 28. Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience heavy rainfall on July 25, with Uttar Pradesh continuing to receive rainfall until July 27.
The IMD’s weather bulletin for July 24 predicts “fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan” until July 29. This widespread rainfall could lead to localized flooding and disruptions in these regions.
In south peninsular India, Karnataka is expected to experience “very heavy rainfall” on July 25. Additionally, the IMD forecasts “heavy rainfall” in Telangana on July 25, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka till July 26, and Kerala till July 27. This prolonged rainfall in these regions could result in significant flooding and waterlogging, impacting daily life and infrastructure.
The IMD predicts “very heavy rainfall” in Odisha until July 26, with “isolated heavy rainfall” expected on July 27 and 28. In the northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, and Sikkim are predicted to experience isolated heavy rainfall on July 27 and 28. These regions should be prepared for potential flooding and disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall.
