Pune is currently experiencing a deluge of heavy rains, causing significant waterlogging across the city. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued a red alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Pune’s ghat areas. An orange alert for very heavy rains has also been declared for the city on July 26.
In response to the severe weather conditions, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed three teams in Pune. Two teams are stationed in Ekta Nagar and Singhgad Road, while one team is positioned in Varje. This deployment is crucial for assisting residents affected by the flooding.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reported that incessant rains since Wednesday night have affected not only the city but also surrounding areas, including Velha, Mulshi, Bhor talukas, and the catchments of several dams, including Khadakwasla. Housing societies in low-lying areas like Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner, and Deccan Gymkhana have experienced severe flooding and inundation, prompting the fire brigade and disaster management cell of the PMC to evacuate stranded individuals.
Given the heavy rainfall warning, schools and colleges in most parts of the district have declared a holiday. The PMC confirmed this decision, citing the weather department’s prediction of heavy rains in Pune and its surrounding areas.
Tragically, four people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Pune. Three men were electrocuted in the Deccan area while attempting to move their handcart, which became submerged due to the heavy rains. Another individual died, and one was injured in a landslide on the Tahmini Ghat section of Mulshi tehsil. Inspector Manoj Yadav of Paud police station confirmed the landslide incident, stating that it occurred at a small eatery in Tahmini Ghat.
The Indian Army and NDRF teams have been actively engaged in rescuing locals stranded in inundated areas. A video shared on Twitter shows NDRF and Indian Army personnel arriving in Pune’s Ekta Nagar to conduct rescue operations. The ongoing rescue efforts reflect the severity of the situation and the importance of collaborative response to the devastating effects of the heavy rains in Pune.
