Beneath the roaring success of India’s tractor industry lies an extraordinary story. It’s not about the men who have long dominated this field, but about a woman whose determination and vision reshaped the landscape. Meet Mallika Srinivasan, the ‘Tractor Queen of India.’ She is the Chairman and Managing Director of TAFE (Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited), a testament to her remarkable journey from a family business to global acclaim.
Married to Indian billionaire Venu Srinivasan, Mallika transformed her family’s business into the world’s third-largest tractor manufacturer, boasting revenues that exceed Rs 10,000 crore. Born in 1959, Mallika’s story began at Madras University, where she completed her undergraduate studies before earning an MBA from Wharton School in the United States. On returning to India, she joined TAFE in 1986 at her father’s invitation. She immersed herself in the business, deeply understanding the needs of the customers and the market trends.
Mallika’s vision extended beyond mere business growth; she was deeply committed to improving the lives of middle-class and lower-middle-class farmers. She regularly visited rural areas, engaging directly with farmers to understand their challenges and needs. This hands-on approach led to the development of affordable, practical products that significantly enhanced farming practices and rural life.
Mallika’s journey with TAFE was not without challenges. Despite market fluctuations, she persistently introduced new products, ensuring continuous growth. Under her leadership, TAFE acquired Eicher’s tractor division in 2005 and expanded its reach internationally with a factory in Turkey. Her strategic decisions propelled TAFE to become India’s second-largest tractor maker, only behind Mahindra & Mahindra.
Beyond business, Mallika is a philanthropist, supporting numerous educational and medical institutions in South India, including Sankara Nethralaya and the Cancer Hospital in Chennai. Mallika serves on the Global Board of the US-India Business Council and is a core member of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance. Her accolades include Forbes India’s Woman Leader of the Year and a spot in Forbes Asia’s Top 50 Power Businesswomen. Mallika’s story is an inspiration, demonstrating that with vision, dedication, and a deep understanding of the needs of her customers, a woman can not only achieve success in a traditionally male-dominated field but also make a significant impact on the lives of others.
